GroupWise 7 Resources

GroupWise Version 7 E-mail is here!

The e-mail servers in the data center will be upgraded to GroupWise 7 beginning on the evening of Wednesday, April 8th. At that time, faculty and staff accounts will be migrated to the new version of GroupWise.

Student accounts will be upgraded to the new version on the evening of April 17.

What do these changes mean?

Once the server changes have taken place, you will see several enhancements to the software for accessing your mail. The new WebMail, for example, looks and feels like many other web-based mail systems. The new GroupWise desktop software now offers a Mac version. Read on for more details….

WebMail Updates

The WebMail change for all faculty, staff and students will occur upon completion of the April 17 upgrade. The new WebMail will be immediately available to faculty, staff and students on your next log in after the upgrade. The new service will be located at the same Web site as the previous version. You don’t even need to update your bookmarks!

Starting on the morning of April 18, you may access the new service by selecting WebMail from the Quicklinks list on the Stevenson home page, or directly at https://webmail.stevenson.edu/.

Some of the many improvements in the new WebMail, include:
•    New look and feel similar to the Windows client
•    Drag-and-drop functionality to easily move items between folders
•    Context-sensitive right-click menus for easy access to commonly used features (for example, Open, Reply, Forward, Accept, Decline, Delete, and so on)
•    Automatic name completion from your Frequent Contacts Address Book
•    Extremely fast address book loading (no more JAVA address book delays!)
•    Folder management, so that you can rearrange the folders in your folder list, add and delete folders, and share folders more easily
•    Quick Find feature for fast full-text searches

GroupWise Desktop Software Updates

Upon completion of the server upgrade, we will be ready to begin the process for Staff and Faculty of upgrading their desktop/laptop GroupWise software to version 7. This new desktop software (or “client”) is available for both Windows PC’s and Apple Macs.

There is no need to rush to upgrade to the new software, so put in a Helpdesk ticket to request your upgrade at a time that will be convenient for you. While you are awaiting your upgrade, you may wish to try the WebMail software to get familiar with the new functionality and screen layout.

You may continue using the currently installed GroupWise version 6.5 desktop software until the fall of 2009.

What about Outlook?

Here’s the big news; if you prefer to use Microsoft Outlook 2003 on your desktop rather than the GroupWise 7 desktop software, we can accommodate that. Outlook 2003 desktop works with well with the GroupWise 7 email servers.

The only catch is that if you decide to move to Outlook, there is no turning back and you can’t have both GroupWise & MS Outlook client software installed.

Please note: Outlook 2007 is not yet supported by Novell (but we are watching this closely!).

Scheduling the Software Installation for Faculty and Staff Computers

If and when you are ready to have your desktop software upgraded, just submit a request to Tech Connection at https://helpdesk.stevenson.edu and we will contact you to schedule the installation. If we haven’t heard from you by the fall of 2009, we will be in touch to schedule the update.

The new software has been in testing by OIT staff since February and there have been no issues.
